Everything in life starts with a thought, positive or negative. Having the ability to choose and direct our thoughts is what separates us from other living species. Unfortunately, we have a tendency to be more negative than positive when it comes to our thinking, which forms many debilitating attitudes that hold us back in life.
In this lesson, we are going to discuss why we should avoid bad attitudes, which is a disease, just as deadly as physical diseases humans suffer from. It is very difficult to function effectively if our minds or our bodies are unhealthy. However, unlike physical diseases, which flare up and may be cured by modern medical remedies, diseases of attitude usually develop slowly and can take a very long time to dispose of permanently.
For example if you have doubted your abilities and talents for the last 30 years, you cannot expect to find confidence in the next 24 hours. However, the more INTENSE your desire is to overcome a negative attitude, the more likely you will be able to recover in a reasonable time-frame.
Let's say that you've developed the habit of constantly finding the negative in the each situation or challenge you encounter. No matter how many wonderful things you have going in your life, if you dwell on the negative, you will have a tendency to focus on it, and make sure everyone around you knows about it. Pick enough negative items to focus on and your attitude will follow your negative thoughts. So what can you do?
The first thing necessary is a focused effort to RESOLVE to change. You MUST start focusing on what's positive in your life and be thankful. You don't want to just be positive for a few moments here and there. Your old negative tendencies will raise its ugly head and want to dominate your thoughts. Instead you need to RESOLVE to make a long term commitment to attract positive people into your life, with whom you could discuss positive ideas and thoughts with. This will begin a work in progress which can bear positive results over a long period of time.
You're mind is extremely powerful. And being that you're in charge of it, you have quite a responsibility. Your mind, IN THE LONG-RUN, will attract to you, whatever you focus on with intensity. This goes for positive things as well as negative. The genius of it all is that you get to CHOOSE which one it will be. Focus on what's great in our world, and like a magnet, these things will be attracted to you. Focus on the not-so-great, and that will be attracted to you instead.
Have you ever known someone, that no matter what the situation or challenge they face, they always seem cheerful and upbeat? A great attitude is not something you are born with, but rather something that individuals must develop. Two different individuals can face the same exact challenge or circumstances. One faces it head on with a positive attitude, that they WILL methodically resolve the issue. The other just complains about how unfair the world is and whines about everything, making themselves and everyone around them miserable. The power of the mind is at work for both individuals. And the power of attitude plays the key role on their outcome and lifestyle.
So what do you do if you've gotten into the habit of attracting the negative into your life? Answer: Focus on the positive. That may be easier said than done, but if you're going to turn things around, you really don't have a choice. If you can train yourself to always look for the good in each situation, then over time (and remember, you made a long-term commitment) you'll start to notice that the good will begin to dominate in your life.
Does that mean that negative things will never happen? Absolutely not! Even the happiest, most cheerful, positive thinking individuals will face many obstacles and very difficult times throughout their lifetimes. How they handle those obstacles and challenges is what makes all the difference in the world.
Always focus consistently on the good. You may have to search hard to find it! But it's worth the effort. When you can control your attitude in this way, your mind will attract more of what's good in life than you can possibly imagine.
