The Qualities Of Leadership 17-Being Resourceful

Poll number:
75

Question-Week ending Sunday 12/28/03:

Which of these leaders do you think was MOST RESOURCEFUL, when they were faced with difficult situations as leaders? Please read our Poll Commentary before taking this poll.

Pre-Poll Commentary:

Someone who is resourceful is capable of dealing with difficult situations. They devise the means and ways to accomplish what needs to be done. It's differs from being creative in the sense that the resourceful individual is already facing a difficult situation that must be resolved - NOW rather than LATER. The creative individual thinks and ponders ways to change or improve a process to benefit the future. They don't necessarily have the pressure to PERFORM IMMEDIATELY. Bear in mind that it surely doesn't hurt to be both resourceful and creative at the same time.

Being resourceful means being able to make decisions quickly. If you were on a sinking small boat, one hundred miles out at sea, you would want to be with a resourceful leader. An individual who may have prepared for such a catastrophe or at least is resourceful enough to know how to survive it. Leaders who are resourceful, make things happen when the chips are down and the situation looks bleak. This is a wonderful quality for a great leader to possess.

In the fast paced world we live in, there are plenty of opportunities to hone your resourcefulness. Challenges occur monthly, weekly or even daily in our lives, that require being resourceful. Being aware of this quality and seeking to hone the skills it takes to be more resourceful, can make a big difference in your life and those around you.

Post-Poll Commentary:

It's obvious to anyone with a sense of history, that all of the leaders on our list faced great difficulty during their administrations. They all needed to display a degree of resourcefulness that was critical to the lives of millions of people.

It's interesting that the most recent leader - Rudy Giuliani received the most votes - even over Abe Lincoln, who is often regarded as one of the greatest Presidents and leaders in U.S. History. The TV images of the September 11th, 2001 attack on New York City are still fresh in all of our minds. There is no doubt that Rudy Giuliani displayed a great deal of resourcefulness during and after the attacks on New York, thus fetching the most votes.

The resourcefulness of great leaders truly can shape history. The decisions made during a time of crisis will have a substantial effect on the future of a family, organization, company, government or civilization as we know it.

We should count our blessings for having individuals who stand tall during tough times and make critical decisions, displaying a high degree of resourcefulness - as well as other great leadership qualities.
