Pre-Poll Commentary:

Our sixteenth keyword in our poll series on moods and emotions is EXCITEMENT. For the purpose of this poll we will describe the meaning of EXCITEMENT as "the feeling of lively and cheerful joy."

By our definition of the word excitement above, who can deny that we desire this emotion? To feel lively and joyful is an emotion we all constantly search for throughout our lives. But too often, many people who have difficulty obtaining the natural state of this emotion, attempt to fabricate it through artificial means.

Excitement in its purest form should erupt from within us as a bi-product of a kind, worthy or conscientious group of action. For example let's say you wanted to throw a surprise party for a loved one. You invested a great deal of time, energy and resources to plan this party. You worked diligently for weeks in advance, to have every detail perfect - right up to the moment that everyone yelled "SURPRISE!" You are so EXCITED to surprise this special person with moments of happiness that you are trembling yourself in anticipation of that special moment. The SURPRISE comes off perfectly and the "feeling of lively and cheerful joy" is spread throughout a room of people; especially you for all your conscientious efforts.

Excitement can be a natural bi-product of so many worthy efforts and actions. Like winning a contest; receiving an award; watching your baby arrive into this world; watching your children achieve recognition for their efforts; etc. It's an emotion we all long for throughout our lives. It doesn't come as often as on might like. But when it does, it's usually worth the efforts and the wait.

However, it will certainly elude individuals who try to fabricate it through un-natural means like alcohol or drugs. The after effects of this un-natural excitement, is too high a price to pay. This method will cause a steady spiral of downward momentum, which can lead to a lifetime of misery.

Go natural! Bring exciting moments into your life by setting worthy goals and working hard to achieve them. Make those around you proud and happy to know you. When you do, you will set yourself up for the many moments of lively and cheerful joy. And a lifetime of happy memories that will linger on forever!

Post-Poll Commentary:

The results of this week's poll were quite refreshing to say the least. A combined 61% of our respondents found the greatest excitement through their children. This result says volumes about our viewers who respond to these polls, who apparently are not part of the "ME" generation.

I also found it most interesting that not one individual voted that winning an elected office was at the top of their excitement list. There are obviously many more events in our life that are more exciting than being elected to an office.

Why not take a moment right now, to think about how you can make your life more exciting. Write down some things or events you can plan or take part in, to bring more "Natural Excitement" into your life. It can be a fun exercise and perhaps lead you to take part in events that can have a positive impact on your life.

Excitement is one emotion on our list that you can plan for. Don't overlook this wonderful emotion. It can pay great dividends of lingering memories of joy, which you can reflect on for a lifetime.
